Soprano Outi Kähkönen of Finland has more than 25 years of experience in the field of voice, teaching singing and vocal pedagogy. She holds a lectureship at the Sibelius Academy, the University of Music, situated in Helsinki, Finland.
Studying classical singing, lied and opera at the Sibelius Academy and in Berlin, she graduated with excellent degrees and pursued a career in opera. Her vocal fach is coloratura soprano and her roles include Susanna in Mozart´s Marriage of Figaro, Blonde in Mozart´s The Abduction from Seraglio, The Queen of the Night in Mozart´s Magic Flute, Zerbinetta in R. Strauss´ opera Ariadne auf Naxos, Adina in Donizetti´s Elisir d´Amore and Gilda in Verdi´s Rigoletto. She has also sung the soprano solo parts of major oratorio works, such as The Messiah by Handel, St. Matthew and St. John Passions by Bach, The Creation by Haydn and Requiem by Mozart. She also sang the soprano solo in Andrew Lloyd Webber´s Requiem first time in Finland. She has performed at the Finnish National Opera, the Savonlinna Opera Festival and the Estonia Theatre in Tallinn and in recitals and concerts in Finland and Germany.
Outi Kähkönen has written several articles on singing and the voice, as well as vocal pedagogy. She has her own lecture series at the Sibelius Academy and regularly visits other institutions lecturing on this topic. Getting acquainted with Estill Voice Training (Certified Master Teacher) has further widened her knowledge, as well as studying voice use in musical theatre, including belting. Her experience as singing teacher is wide and varied with both advanced students and beginners. Her keen interest in the voice as an instrument has also made her an expert in vocal trouble shooting, helping singers overcome technical or vocal health issues.
Outi was President of the Finnish Association of Teachers of Singing in 2000-2009. Currently, she is President of the European Association of Teachers of Singing (EVTA).
